Milky Way Disc, Milky Way Kinematics And Dynamics, Milky Way Structure, Solar Neighbourhood

One of the most intriguing features in the solar neighborhood stellar velocity distribution are the so called moving groups. These groups are stellar streams observed as overdensities in the velocity space, crossing the region nearby the Sun. At 140 years of their discovery, the understanding of the origin of these kinematic structures is still far from complete. Several scenarios for their origin are considered: cluster disruption, dynamical effects induced by the Milky Way non-axisymmetric components (i.e. spiral arms and bar), remnants of past accretion events, and external dynamical effects on the disc like galaxy satellites flybys. Here we present a historical review of the study and interpretation of moving groups. Next, we show how a recent kinematic-age-metallicity analysis of some of the dominant kinematic structures in the solar neighborhood UV plane, have led us to evaluate or even discard scenarios relating the moving groups origin to cluster disruption. Numerical simulations with Milky Way models have made possible to establish that the bar and spiral arms induce a kinematic response in the local stellar velocity distribution and these signatures depend on the Galaxy mass structure. The Galaxy response seems richer than initially expected. The Milky Way structure and evolution can trigger kinematic overdensities similar to the classical moving groups or to the so called kinematic branches, but it can also produce low angular momentum groups. The need for new and strategic theoretical and observational approaches to the problem, as a preparation for the upcoming Gaia data, is also discussed.
