Photographic photometry in the BVI(K) system was obtained on red stars in a field centered on NGC 419 in the SMC. The location of the stars in the color diagram and the very red B-V color of the red giant tip of the giant branch suggest that these stars are carbon stars. The mean absolute visual magnitude of the stars reported is -2.1. The stars in this field and also the field around NGC 371 having V greater than about 17 and very red B-V appear comparable with N-type variables of small amplitude belonging to the old disk population in the Galaxy. Stars comparable with the young disk group of Eggen (1972) are found at brighter magnitudes.
