It is found that an amount of interstellar matter comparable to the mass of the present planetary system can be accreted into the solar system over its lifetime. The mass brought in by the steady accretion is exceeded by the mass accreted while the solar system resides in dark clouds. Since the elemental abundances in a dark cloud are considered to be heterogeneous due to matter processed inside stars and then ejected, the continuous accretion causes elemental heterogeneities in the solar system.
