The maximum possible ejection velocity of the recoil binary in the slingshot theory of double radio sources is investigated using (1) Newtonian three-body calculations from a survey of 25,000 numerical experiments and (2) a general-relativistic approximation of the equations of motion. It is shown that although the ejection of a massive binary from a giant elliptical galaxy will occur only if the triple system is relativistic, the Newtonian calculations may be justified for some of the randomly generated three-body examples. The results for these examples demonstrate the possibility of binary ejection in a large variety of triple systems, particularly those in which the orbits are not restricted to a single plane. The general-relativistic analysis shows that the maximum ejection velocity may be about five times greater than determined with the Newtonian calculations and that each ejection event produces a large flux of gravitational radiation that should be observable in principle. The problem of approximate symmetry in the ejection of double radio sources is considered, and some possible solutions are proposed.
