Integrated V-K colors are formed from multiaperture K magnitudes obtained for a large number of spiral galaxies. The integrated colors are combined with previous data for early-type galaxies, and a well-defined but heretofore unknown relation between UVK colors and morphological class is revealed. It is found that the dispersion in V-K color is comparable with the dispersion in U-V for each Hubble type, that galaxies fall along a generally well-defined and continuous sequence as they advance in morphological type, and that this morphological sequence is clearly separated from the distribution defined by ellipticals and globular clusters. The bifurcation in the elliptical and spiral loci is shown to indicate that a fundamental difference exists between the two distributions. It is concluded that the behavior of the UVK color-morphology relation can be explained by the composite effect of mixing red and blue stars.
