A star with properties quite similar to those of Sco X-1 is identified as a strong candidate for the optical counterpart of the weak X-ray source 3U 1956+11 (= 2S 1957+115 and 4U 1957+11). The candidate is located within 10 arcsec of an accurate X-ray position determined for the source from SAS 3 observations and exhibits a definite UV excess. Results are reported for spectrophotometry of the candidate, photometry of the source field, an examination of older plate material, and spectroscopy and photometry of five other stars within the error box of Bradt et al. (1976). It is found that the candidate's spectrum is a flat featureless continuum well-approximated by the line Fnu = 1.1 by 10 to the -27th power erg/sq cm per sec per Hz throughout the wavelength region from 3700 to 7200 A. The variation of interstellar extinction with distance in the source region is estimated, the candidate star is shown to be unusually subluminous, and the properties of the candidate are compared with those of known X-ray source identifications. The parameters of the 3U 1956+11 system are computed by assuming that the candidate is similar to Sco X-1; a distance of about 7 kpc is obtained along with an implied X-ray luminosity of 1.6 by 10 to the 36th power erg/sec.
