The authors present two ways to create "braids" in Saturn's F ring. One model assumes a small (≡5 - 10 km radius) moonlet embedded in the ring. A single moonlet seems to be capable of producing a few (≡2 - 6) irregular braids for the parameters appropriate to the F ring. Alternatively, extended, nearly periodic "braids" may be produced in a multistranded segment of the F ring by a single encounter with a single shepherding satellite. This mechanism does not require any embedded moonlets for creating the braids; however, it does require multistranded "initial" conditions, and moonlets might produce these.
