Methods for obtaining discrete Fourier transforms of data sampled at unequal intervals are discussed; the Fourier techniques are applicable to stellar spectroscopy and other astronomical problems. Direct methods, including the solution proposed by Deeming in 1975, and the use of the relatively crude trapezoidal rule to evaluate Fourier coefficients, are considered. An alternate technique for finding the function values at the equal intervals required for discrete Fourier transform routines involves use of the Gram-Schmidt (or sometimes simply the Schmidt) orthogonalization algorithm as an interpolation method.
