A detailed absolute calibration of H-alpha data and results of a 2695-MHz radio-continuum survey are used to construct contour maps of the visual extinction (AV), H-alpha surface brightness, and radio brightness temperature throughout most of the Cygnus X complex. The distribution of interstellar extinction is obtained directly from a comparison of the optical and radio emission from the ionized hydrogen in the complex. Errors which affect the visual-extinction map are evaluated, the rather low radio-telescope resolution of 11 arcmin is shown to lie in the optimum range for the purposes intended, and the unresolved thermal background of the radio map is attributed to two large H II complexes. The variation of the mapped extinction is described, and attention is given to observed characteristics of optically bright nebulae, the Cygnus OB2 association, several compact H II regions, a supernova remnant, the NGC 6888 area, and the optical nebulosities IC 1318 b and c. Two additional regions of extended and rather high extinction are also identified. The results are taken as strengthening the previous hypothesis that the objects in Cygnus X are distributed along the line of sight rather than being clumped at one distance.
