A method is presented for calculating exactly the velocity distribution function of neutral interstellar atoms at each location within a stellar system, taking into account both the effect of the stellar gravitational field and elastic collisions with stellar-wind protons. This method is based on the concepts of the Boltzmann equation and is not restricted to small-angle particle deflections. Attention is given to the collisionless distribution function, the thermal behavior of collisionless interstellar gas, the collision-dominated distribution function, and the gasdynamical properties of the collision-dominated gas fraction. The method is apparently applied to the case of the solar system, and results are obtained which indicate that all previously calculated first-order interplanetary-hydrogen densities at 1 AU for which the effect of elastic collisions had been neglected are too high by about 10% to 25%. The computations also show that interplanetary-hydrogen gas temperatures due to collisional heating effects range from 2600 to 7000 K at upwind to downwind orbital positions of earth and that helium at 1 AU attains a temperature of 2000 to 4500 K.
