The bright (B = 16.00) QSO PG 0946+301, the only known broad absorption line (BAL) QSO at intermediate redshift (Zem = 1.214) was studied using optical observations in the red, obtained with the 5 m Hale telescope at Palomar Observatory, and ultraviolet data acquired with IUE. The latter extend down to 550 A in the rest frame, unobscured by intervening absorption optically thick in the Lyman continuum, and thus give an unprecedented view of a number of spectral features (emission and absorption lines) until now not detected outside the solar system. Considered together, these optical and ultraviolet data provide fresh clues to the nature of the BAL phenomenon and the relationship between BAL and normal QSOs, they demonstrate the scientific potential of future far-ultraviolet missions.
