The authors have analysed IUE spectra of a large sample of quasars covering a wide redshift range to determine the nature of the ultraviolet continuum and its relationship to other wavebands. At low redshifts the continuum shows definite curvature around Ly α, steepening to give a continuum slope that when extrapolated to 2 keV lies just above the observed X-ray flux. There is evidence for evolution in the continuum in the sense that the slope of the continuum above Ly α is flatter at higher redshifts. The observed continuum shape at low redshifts is consistent with a thermal origin for the ultraviolet continuum.
