Research over the last few years, principally with the IUE observatory, has clearly demonstrated the existence of shock interactions and accretion in detached binaries like the ζ Aurigae type systems. The authors present preliminary results of the N V lines in these systems, including the evidence for a reverse P-Cygni profile in ζ Aur and 22 Vul. They examine differences in observable parameters among the systems in the light of their current research.
