A 5.5 h SWP exposure completed a set of 12 IUE spectra of Saturn's rings obtained between July 1982 and February 1985. The most obvious feature of the combined spectrum, which covers the wavelength range from 1600 to 3100 Å, is the water ice absorption edge between 1650 and 1700 Å. Preliminary multiple scattering calculations indicate that the rings must contain extremely small particles (a ≡ 0.003 μm) with a scale height larger than the bigger ring particles. Using the Rayleigh scattering approximation a column abundance is found of 6×1015 H2O-iceparticles/cm2 above any significant amount of bigger particles. There is also some evidence for H2O vapor absorption between 1700 and 1800 Å. The derived column abundance is Nvapor = 3×1014cm-2.
