High-dispersion IUE spectra of Comet Halley and Comet Giacobini-Zinner were obtained. Results include a new upper limit for (OD/OH) less than 0.0003 to 0.0005, significant spatial variation in the profiles of the OH bands, and the first cometary continuum seen at high dispersion. The limit on (OD/OH) implies an upper limit of 10 to 20x for the fractionation that occurred during the formation of the comets. The relative strengths of the lines of OH vary with distance from the nucleus in such a way as to show that, near the nucleus, collisions quench the Lambda doublet inversion. Careful fitting of the band profiles will reveal the size of the hole at the nucleus seen by radio astronomers.
