IUE observations of comets obtained over almost a decade have allowed to build a true data base of spectra of comets in the UV. In all comets observed with IUE, it has been found that water was the dominant species and that CO and CO2 relative abundances were highly variable. The dust/gas production ratio varies by orders of magnitude from one comet to another. Although there appear signs of variability of many kinds in comet spectra, the evidence from the UV observations described here is that all comets have the same chemical composition and that observed differences are due to evolution/aging processes. But it is likely that comets are very inhomogeneous at a small scale.
