V838 Mon is an enigmatic star that underwent a 100 day outburst in 2002, an event that is still unexplained. During the event the star was observed to be a very cool luminous supergiant, photometrically and spectrally unlike any other stellar outburst observed. There are naturally various theories about what could have caused the star to behave in this way; a falling in of another body, stellar or planetary, are the most promising ideas at the moment.
The light from the outburst produced a spectacular `light echo', moving away from the star and progressively lighting up dust in the circumstellar environment. To be able to envisage the 3-dimensional distribution of the dust would greatly aid in understanding what happened to V838 Mon in 2002: for example, a distribution centered on the star itself could imply that the dust also came from the star itself.
We have turned the HST images of the light echo into such a 3D distribution. We present here our initial findings, and (hopefully) also an interactive display of the dust distribution.
