Thermal effects associated with the presence of a horizontal magnetic tube in the upper convection zone of the sun are presently studied under an idealization of energy transfer as radiative-plus-convective conduction. The dark filaments with bright rims observable on the disk are predicted, and it is conjectured that this configuration leads to active regions when dynamical effects are taken into account.
