Optical spectroscopy and photometry of 4U 1258-61 obtained over the course of six years are presented. The H profiles show large changes in line strength and shape throughout the observations; the V magnitude also varies by about 0.5 mag. The photometry implies a spectral class of B4 for a main sequence star, suggesting that the variability is related to the evolution of the circumstellar environment. The observed profiles of the H-alpha line are presented.
