The rather extensive imaging through narrowband filters that has been carried out in the last few years has shown the existence of a number of emission-line objects (in particular, related to Herbig-Haro objects or supernova remnants) which show a "bow shock-like" structure. The purpose of this paper is to provide predictions from a simple theoretical model which can be directly compared with these observations, and in principle could help to decide whether the emission-line spectrum of these bow shock-like objects is truely formed in a bow shock or in a different kind of flow.
