Several studies have found that Seyfert galaxies are more likely to have companions than normal galaxies. A similar correlation is indicated for quasars. The authors investigate whether gravitational tides from companions with the observed masses and distances will be sufficient to provoke global gravitational instability in the disks of spiral galaxies and thus nuclear gas inflow during the passage of a companion. The model consists of a self-gravitating 60,000 particle disk in an inert spherical halo. It is found that the required level of tidal perturbation for rapid global instability and significant nuclear inflows indeed matches the observed triggering level found for Seyferts by Dahari. Observed companions of quasars would also produce tidal fields equal to or greater than the level required in the authors' models.
