It has been proposed that recently observed solar microwave and hard X-ray bursts can be interpreted in terms of a synchrotron/inverse Compton mechanism and that the very fast time structures associated with such events are determined by the inverse Compton radiative lifetime. The feasibility of the inverse Compton interpretation is analysed in detail. With particular reference to the simultaneous microwave and hard X-ray observations of a solar burst it is shown that the model is self-consistent for a narrow range of marginally plausible parameters if it is assumed that the short timescales are determined by processes other than radiative losses.
