The equilibria of polytropic spheres, cylinders, and slabs with both positive and negative indices, and isothermal cases as well, are investigated in the presence of homogeneous background matter. The relations of the size of polytrope to the density of background matter are given. It is shown that the background matter prevents the masses of all polytropes but the polytropic sphere with n between -1.5 and -1 from divergence and stabilizes the polytropic sphere with n larger than 3. The gravitational instabilities of polytropes truncated by the external pressure are also examined and the critical masses are obtained. Applications to the self-gravitating and pressure-confined intergalactic clouds within homogeneous dark matter are discussed, in relation to the formation of galaxies.
