The fundamental principles of spectroscopy and its applications to astronomy and astrophysics are discussed in an introductory review and illustrated with diagrams, drawings, and sample spectra. The laws proposed by Kirchhoff to characterize the relationship among continuum, line-emission, and absorption spectra are introduced; their implications for observations of the light radiated by the outer layers of a star are considered; Fraunhofer and flash spectra of the sun are interpreted in terms of the reversing-layer model; the spectral features not explained by this model are indicated; and the use of spectroscopic observations to estimate the abundances of atomic or molecular species is demonstrated for the case of D in the interstellar medium (on the basis of Copernicus UV observations of Gamma Cas).
