An approximate method for the removal of the instrument response function from spectrographic observations of solar line profiles is proposed. It is shown that profiles obtained using the present method have a random distortion error of 0.1 percent for line profiles with half-widths twice as large as the half-width of the instrument response function. By comparison with line profiles obtained using the iterative technique of Burger and Van Sittert, the present method was found to be more accurate. The line profiles are compared in a table.
