A kinematic dynamo model is proposed which reflects the main structural features of the earth's core and allows a determination of poloidal velocity modes which provide for the most efficient magnetic-field generation. Magnetic-field generation in a partially stratified core with velocities of toroidal motion of the order of the western-drift velocity of magnetic anomalies of the earth is demonstrated. The poloidal-flow velocity sufficient in this model to generate the earth's dipole magnetic field is 300-1000 times less than the western-drift velocity. It is concluded that the proposed model makes it possible to determine optimal orientations for arbitrary poloidal velocity modes.
