Expressions are derived for the velocities of tidal flows in close binary star systems with eccentric orbits. The third spherical harmonic is taken into account in the expansion of the tidal-interaction expansion. The solutions are applicable to the giant planets of the solar system and to white dwarfs without the introduction of corrections for compressibility. The Saturn-Titan system and the binary system BD + 16 deg 516 (V 471 Tau) are considered as examples.
