Recent radiometric and polarimeteric data are reviewed which suggest that the frequent electrical discharges in the surface layers of the Venus atmosphere are related to volcanic activity. Variations in the particle size distribution of the submicron haze in the Venusian cloud layer; and the microphysical properties of the clouds themselves are also explained within the framework of the volcanic eruption hypothesis.
