Spectroscopy of the luminous star Eta Carinae has been performed in the atmospheric windows between 1.0 and 2.3 microns. The spectral resolution employed, up to about 1200, is the highest yet used at these wavelengths on this object. More than 80 emission lines have been recorded, and identifications are offered for 90 percent of them, mostly with species also seen at optical wavelengths. In comparison with other wave bands, the emission lines are little affected by either circumstellar reddening or optical depth effects. Evidence is found that the central star is hotter than 40,000 K. It has also been possible to estimate abundances for some species. Eta Car is found to be clearly overabundant in helium, but probably underabundant in iron in the gaseous state. A table of identifications of the emission lines will serve as a finding list in subsequent analysis of the IR spectra of emission-line systems.
