The authors report on first experiences from applying the method of three-colour photometry on Milky Way fields with strong interstellar extinction. Since the apparently sparsely populated field Aquila II is at a distance of only 2°.4 from Aquila I, a field with large apparent star density, a comparison of the extremes is tempting and possible. 1125 stars on 24 48arcsec Palomar Schmidt plates (8 in each colour R, G and U) within an area of 1.76 square degrees have been measured down to a limiting magnitude of 17m.8 in G. To make the distribution of the other stars somewhat more transparent it is advisable to determine the reddening function, at least provisionally according to the classical method by means of spectral types which are known for 74 stars. It shows monotonously increasing reddening with increasing apparent distance modulus. The density function of the late-type giants is almost constant, but the densities are smaller by a factor of about 10 than the ones in Aquila I.
