Photoionization models are applied to the regions which produce the absorption spectra of QSOs. The absorbing material is assumed to be located according to the statistical studies of Weymann et al. (1979). Observational data for intervening systems can be reproduced by clouds ionized by the integrated radiation field of all QSOs; in this case, the obtained density and mass of the clouds are small (less than 10 solar masses). The observational data can also be reproduced for the regions ejected and ionized by the object, as well as for absorbing systems and associated QSOs belonging to the same cluster.
