It is suggested that the sunward streaming protons accelerated in the travelling interplanetary shock which accompanies a coronal mass ejection have sufficient energy to power the long duration solar X-ray event frequently correlated with the ejections. The energy flux of such protons over a 104s period is estimated to be comparable to the total energy content of the X-ray emitting plasma during the long decay of a typical event.
