Scientific paper
The present status of interstellar chemistry is reviewed, with emphasis given to its value as a source of astronomical information. Among the specific topics discussed are: the time scales of variations in the chemical composition of interstellar gas clouds; and the sensitivity of chemical composition to changes in density, temperature, the radiation environment and the role of the C/O ratio in the formation of gas clouds. The contribution to molecular formation and destruction processes by reactions occurring on grain surfaces is also considered.
