We have observed 12 Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9 galaxies using the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra were taken with IRS Staring mode in both low resolution (R ˜\ 64-128) SL and LL modes as well as high resolution (R ˜\ 600) SH and LH modes. The target host galaxies were selected to be face on (b/a ≥ 0.5) for minimum contamination from dust in the galactic plane. Using the low resolution spectra, we characterize the mid-IR spectral energy distributions and silicate 10 micron strengths of these AGN for comparison with Spitzer spectra of Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies. Using the high resolution spectra, we have measured the strengths of the narrow emission lines in the mid-IR to characterize the inner narrow-line region, which is likely affected by strong extinction in the optical. The main goal of this project is to understand the distribution and properties of hot dust close to the central AGN.
