The Tsyganenko (1989) magnetic field model is presently modified to encompass the development of the magnetic field configuration in the course of a growth phase, and then applied in the study of the magnetic field and electric current distributions in the magnetotail at the time of a magnetospheric substorm onset. This onset is described as a disruption of the cross-tail current, modeled by a current meander in the cross-tail current. The forming current profile compresses field lines in the direction of the current sheet; plasmoidal structures form in the tail with the X-O geometry in the magnetic field.
