The photometric and kinematic properties of the core of the elliptical galaxy IC 4296 are studied to obtain clues about the formation and dynamical evolution of the parent galaxy. The observed B-R and B-V gradients can be ascribed to the presence of a star cluster made of low-mass stars, to emission from ionized gas in the core, or to the presence of nuclear dust. The luminosity profile show apparently sizeable deviations from the R exp 1/4 law, which could be caused by stellar redistribution in the field of a supermassive black hole.
