The Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) is an ambitious all-sky spectroscopic survey to measure radial velocities and stellar atmosphere parameters (temperature, metallicity, surface gravity) of up to one million stars using the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). The diffuse interstellar band (DIB) at 8620 Å has been measured on high S/N, multi-epoch RAVE spectra of hot stars at low galactic latitudes toward the central regions of the Galaxy. The equivalent width is found to correlate well with reddening, confirming the proportionality relation E(B-V) = 2.7 x E.W.(Å) found by Munari (1999, 2000) on higher resolution spectra of hot stars in the general galactic anti-center direction. The carrier of the 8620 Å DIB therefore appears to originate in the solid phase of the interstellar medium, and the DIB itself to be a good reddening tracer. The automation of DIB detection and measure is discussed, as well as intrinsic and cosmic dispersion in the proportionality relation.
