Long-slit spectroscopic observations are presented of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5846. This galaxy is notable as it apparently does not rotate, contrary to the behavior of other early-type systems (Franx et al., 1989). The data cover the wavelength range 4800-5700 A, and are used to investigate the strengths of various absorption features out to a distance of about 11 arcsec from the nucleus. Significant gradients are detected in the H-beta and Mg2 indices; the latter weakens with radius by an amount Delta Mg2/Delta log r about -0.08 + or - 0.03, which is in good agreement with that detected in other luminous early-type systems.
