It is well known that transits of Venus occur in pairs, separated by an interval of more than one hundred years. Of the next pair, the first on 2004 June 8 will be visible in its entirety for European observers, while the second on 2012 June 5-6 will be seen to its greatest advantage from far eastern longitudes. The transit in 2004 is the first to be wholly visible from the British Isles since 1283, although others have been partly visible.
