The Self Absorption Curve (SAC) method of Friedjung and Muratorio is derived directly from a more usual description of emission from optically thick sources. The present derivation shows that the SAC function Q(t_0) is the logarithm of the line-of-sight photon escape probability associated with the particular model used. A description of the photon escape probability concept and its present state of development is therefore given, with some examples of source models currently utilized.
