The infrared source IRC +10216 is a late-type variable carbon star with an extensive envelope of dust and gas caused by mass loss from the central star. Because of the variability of the source and the fact that in the far-IR, calibration uncertainties are generally more than the statistical errors, the authors attempted to measure the spectrum and, if possible, the size, in a single experiment. In this paper, they describe the results of observations from a balloon-borne telescope in the 20 - 160 μm range. The authors measured the fluxes simultaneously in four photometric channels and present the results on the spectrum, and the emissivity of dust grains responsible for the same.
