Attention is given to a growing body of evidence obtained through both solar and stellar X-ray observations which indicates that flares play a direct role in coronal heating. An evaluation is made of X-ray light curves of impulsive events, the correlation between mean X-ray luminosity and time-averaged luminosity in U-band flare light, and Einstein Observatory X-ray observations of Prox Cen. The optical flares of the latest type M dwarfs, such as Prox Cen, are noted to bear a striking resemblance to solar impulsive X-ray events.
