A general form of the force-free-field energy principle is developed on the basis of the Bernstein et al. (1958) energy principle. Two sufficient conditions for stability are derived which can be effectively used in judging the stability of force-free fields. In addition, by generalizing the Krueger (1976) analysis, a third sufficient condition for stability is derived. The procedure for estimating the level of stability of force-free fields in space is described.
