Just a decade ago, astronomers thought stellar core collapse was primarily a spherical process. Gamma-ray bursts, with their powerful jets (powered by a central engine) and at the same time a spherical explosion (supernovae) have upset this paradigm. Empirically there appears to be a wide range in the energy of the spherical explosion and the jets. This opens up the possiblity that the spherical explosion+engine is the correct paradigm for all explosions, SNe and GRBs. Here we propose in-depth study of the nearest core collapse events which show evidence of a central engine (e.g. SN 1998bw and the nearest GRBs). Our synergistic multi-wavelength effort (radio, optical and proposed Chandra observations) are designed to study both the spherical and the jet components under this framework.
