An index of recurrence of enhanced geomagnetic activity is investigated to determine its relationship to activity from the descending and ascending cycles. The 20th and 21st eleven-year solar cycles are compared to the index with respect to the latitudinal and longitudinal distribution of solar magnetic fields and prominences. Streamers from the solar wind enhance the large geomagnetic disturbances of the descending phase and are phenomena that relate primarily to the magnetic fields of the old activity cycle.
