We propose a 90 ks ACIS-I observation of the exceptionally rich star-forming region Trumpler 16, hosting the extremely massive star Eta Car, and many other massive OB and Wolf-Rayet stars. We intend to study here for the first time the low-mass stars in the cluster, down to subsolar masses. Main objective of this work is to examine whether star formation, which was extremely efficient here to produce such a large population of massive objects, was equally efficient in forming low mass stars. We expect to detect around 1000 low-mass stars in this cluster, whose study will provide crucial tests of star formation efficiency and history, and the initial mass function, over a very broad range of masses, under exceptional conditions.
