In this paper we generalize Walecka's (1974) mean field model to include the case of all the baryons in the eightfold state. We discuss the effect of hyperons and the physical properties of cool neutron stars. A general theoretical result is given without presupposing the SU(3) symmetry, and numerical calculation was made on assuming the SU(3) symmetry. When ρ = 4.43(+14) g/cm3, hyperons begin to appear; their effect is to soften the equation of state by about 8%. We obtained the following values: maximum mass of a neutron star, 2.37 M; the corresponding radius, 11.1 km; rotational inertia, 4.3 (+45) g cm2; central density, 2.32 (+15) g/cm3.
