Calculations are carried out to quantify the angle between the zero meridian plane in the NWL9D coordinate system and the astronomical zero meridian plane at Greenwich. Estimates are made of the angle, which originates from approximately 1-2 m from the terrestrial center of gravity. Least squares calculations are applied to vertical deflection data, sea surface heights obtained with satellite altimetry, and spherical harmonic coefficients. When the deflection-based estimates are combined with the sea surface heights an angle of -0.63 to -0.47 arcsec is calculated, close to the 0.50 arcsec figure calculated in 1979 to transform the NWL9D data to a correctly oriented system.
