The errors of the lumped geopotential coefficents of the Earth gravity field model GEM-L 2 are computed twice: (1) just from the variances of its harmonic coefficients, (2) accounting the full variance-covariance matrix. The differences between results (1) and (2) are not negligible. The impact of the differences on the accuracy assessment of Earth models is pursued.
