The variations in the Moon's mean motion due to the Earth's tides have been derived under the supposition that the Earth is perfectly elastic. The corresponding variations in the orbital angular momentum of the Earth-Moon system have been computed and it has been demonstrated that the tidal variations in the maximum principal moment of the Earth's inertia should essentially be compensated by the tidal variations in the angular velocity of the Earth's rotation.
